Things we've been doing

Hello lovely internet friends (and real life friends who are reading online)

What have we been up to? Allsorts (ish)!

First, let me tell you a little bit about Saturday night, which was ACE. It was Supernight vs Im Not From London at the Maze and it was a cracker. Ox & Lamb played a great set, despite only having had 6 hours to put something together. All the songs sounded fantastic and it was nice to hear a different tone/feel to their Fists work. Plus we got to hear Yr Glove (which I love) live and some new materials too.

Following that we were treated to a noisy set from 20 Year Hurricane who brought energy and comments about being "very porous" to the stage, as well as a child's mexican wrestling mask. Nick (the singer/ex-colleague of mine/friend) later mentioned that Daddy Bones's verdict on the too small wrestling mask was..."burn victim". Harsh, but when I manage to get the pictures up here, you'll see it's also true! They were great, second outing for them and I hope to see them again soon.... Bassist Chris striking a pose, Drummer (and Birthday Boy) Gareth being amazingly into performing and brilliant to watch and Nick playing guitar, singing, being self-deprecating and moving around the stage like a wind-up toy. Brilliant!

If I'm honest I didn't really watch the other two bands. I saw a bit of two guys playing covers which wasn't really my sort of thing and then I got so hot I had to go outside. I heard a bit of Nephu Huzzband from out there and they sounded pretty good. Definitely not what I expected... I've seen the name around before and thought they were some sort of ska/punk/reggae/funk-rock band. Delighted to say they're not! Mainly I just chatted outside to loads of random people and caught up with Ang and James a bit, which I always love.

I'm rambling but I should quickly mention two more things. Firstly, the wrestling, scary, shocking, very well prepared (they had suits and masks and everything!). Secondly, Dan Toporowski made some visuals for the gig which we tried every which way to get projected but technology failed us. Not only am I gutted for Dan that his hard work wasn't seen, but I'm gutted for me that I didn't get to see them and I know they would be amazing. THANKS Dan, hopefully we can persuade you to put them on YouTube? Or will they be a lost classic?

Anyway, what I'm basically rambling about here is that it was a great night, and thanks to everyone who came, hope you enjoyed it?!

Other stuff we've done:

- Exams - for me, in the middle of them and should be revising now. BOO.

- Saw Iron Man - What a preposterous film! I did enjoy this, but seriously, I can't believe it exists in parts. he has his own private jet and the air stewardesses pole dance for him. Who wrote this? A 13 year old boy? It was ludicrous, but fun.

- Watched the Apprentice - Love it as always and very much looking forward to the Interview show tomorrow (when I should be revising again). Who's going to win? Boggle eyed Helene? Gobby Claire? Beret-maniac Lucinda? 3rd Person talker Lee McQueen? Or pouty sulky Alex Wotherspoon (Wotherspoon is a great name!)?

- Saw Indiana Jones - Another preposterous film. Worth seeing, but god it gets silly, be prepared. I won't say more, because I'm not a spoiler, but be aware that there are great bits and there are shit bits. And boy does he look old at times.

- Baked brownies - and did a blind taste test on Anders... mine won, I'll be honourable and not say who I beat!

That's another exciting installment of "things I've been doing"!!!!!!!!!!!!!! a.k.a. ramble ramble blah blah blah

Have lovely weeks everybody, and see you soon!

What a bunch of...

Check out the video for the NotInNottingham Christmas song. Keep your eyes peeled for some highly naturalistic acting from Anders and some fabulous lip-synching from myself... oh and of course Tom Whalley looking daft in his hat...

FISTS
YUNIOSHI
POLYMATH
SPACESHIPS ARE COOL
ASHLEY & THE ASKINS
WE SHOW UP ON RADAR

JOEY CHICKENSKIN
+ DJs!
+ more!

Hello!

I really hope you can make it to The Maze next Saturday. Not only is it our last gig of the year, but we're also helping Not in Nottingham launch their new Christmas LP.

Following on from last year's triumphant mix, it features the cream of Nottingham's musical talent jingling their bells, dingdonging merrily, and generally rocking (and folking) around the Christmas tree.

To celebrate, we've got a load of the bands, plus a load of our friends, coming along to play their favourite Christmas songs and help us get all festive.

It's going to be an indie-folk-gabba-bump'n'grind yuletide special with the twin gifts of live music and top DJs. Oh yes, all that and we may just receive a visit from the Annual Gift Man too. It's going to be the mother of all Christmas parties. And it's free, as our Christmas gift to you!

Hope to see you there!

Notts on Radio 1

You probably don't listen to Radio 1 very often, neither do we really, until that is Huw Stephens profiled Nottingham bands and Supernight favourites Spaceships Are Cool were featured, alongside Supernight's very own Fists!

Here's the link. Just click "listen to this week's show" and skip forward 15 mins (unless you want to listen to Huw!) You'll hear him introduce Dean Jackson from the Beat and then some of Nottingham's best kept secrets get a bit of national exposure!

Enjoy!

p.s. catch Fists AND Spaceships Are Cool at Supernight on the 15th Dec @ the Maze. It's going to be a cracking christmas party.

Thanks for making Supernight great!

Hello there,

This is a big fat THANKS to everyone who came to Supernight on Saturday!

And also to the lovely Oxjam people, the wonderful bands who performed, the delightful Kate Musgrove who did projections, my sister Katie who made a really nice cake, the fantastic Tether group with their art tombola prizes and The Maze for having us!

So... hope you had a good time? We did! We'll be putting some photos online soon and I'll post the link up here for you.

Some of my favourite moments included:

- Most of Fists set but especially the little ghost tune (little gho-o-o-o-o-o-st!)
- Lovely Joe working the tombola like a demon
- Seeing the proud winner of a beautiful yellow woolly hat and orange necklace modelling his prize... yellow is really Ned's colour...
- Enjoying the slightly surreal experience of walking out the back door of the Maze and realising there was a team of Maze staff completely rebuilding the back half of the club!
- Watching Napoleon IIIrd - that was the first time I've seen him and I thought he was amazing - Raising money for Oxfam (I don't know how much, you can't get the lids off those rattly tins, but thanks to everyone who donated anything!)

Last but not least, my absolute favourite thing:

- Taking home my most random souvenir ever from a night out... a golf club.

Anyway, it's Monday now, work time, so I'd better get on with some!

Love Becky

p.s. if the nice man who really would've liked a Jarvis Cocker badge (rather than a rubbish Kaiser Chiefs one) is reading this, drop me an email, I saved one for you.

Write a novel in a month?

Something of a small craze is starting to take hold at Supernight, with two of our number having decided that this November they're going to write a novel. In one month. It's a hard task, but someone's got to do it.

Anyway, it all came about as a result of being sent this website:

http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/whatisnano

There's something infectious about the idea that it really is quantity, not quality that counts.

If they let me, I'll post up some excerpts as they get into the swing of it. AND, if anyone wants to join us, then please please do! Send me excerpts of yours and I'll post those up too. If enough people do it we can all get together for a celebration and can laugh at the terrible novels we've written in one month together!

p.s. I really should mention that all plans are in place for a fabulous gig on Saturday at the Maze, and you know it's all for charity so come on down and eat cake, wear badges, see projections, listen to bands, enter the raffle, dance, drink and make merry!

Supernight OXJAM do - 27th October - Save up your pennies!

After a roaring success last year which saw Supernight raise over £700 for Oxfam as part of the Oxjam festival, we're back with a cracking line-up for our Oxjam 07 gig on the 27th October at The Maze (what a brilliant venue, right?)

As well as 3 fantastic live performances (details below) We're also thinking up myriad ways to shake the spare change loose from your pockets in the name of a good cause.

Prepare to eat yummy homemade cake, to swap £1 for badges created by musical luminaries such as Jarvis Cocker and to take part in our Oxfam raffle, with fabulous prizes carefully sourced from Oxfam shops round the city.

Playing live:

NAPOLEON IIIrd (Brainlove Records) www.myspace.com/boney3

Brilliant one-man band embracing all of Brian Wilson's maverick genius, but with a battered reel-to-reel tape machine and some wonky kids' instruments instead of 4 fellas and a state of the art studio.

BALOR KNIGHTS (Thee SPC) www.myspace.com/balorknights

Creators of gloriously messy indie rock that staggers and weaves everywhere from Pixies to Bearsuit and has earned them a legion of fans including 6Music and Rough Trade.

FISTS www.myspace.com/fistsmusic

You never quite know what to expect with this anti-folk rocktopus, from ramshackle marching drum Casiotone workouts to catchy lo-fi pop.

Come and dance and sing and have a good time and feel like a good person because you're doing it all for charity (and kicks).

p.s. bring along your favourite charity shop tunes and we'll play them!

September ROCKS!

Hi-de-hi!

September is an awesome month.

It began with my 30th birthday (which was a real doozy, I can tell you!)
and it's going to end like this...

FRIDAY 28th SEPTEMBER @ The Maze, Mansfield Road

SJ ESAU (Anticon)
His biog reads like a pack of lies - freestyled with Massive Attack, won DMC Rap Battles aged 12, duetted with Lou Barlow... but releases on both Twisted Nerve and now Anticon would seem to back up such outlandish claims.
What is undeniably true is that Sam makes wonderful, warped folk akin to Beck, Animal Collective and Why?
We've been trying to book this guy for ages and we finally got him!

www.sjesau.co.uk

MONSTER BOBBY (Hypnote)
Signed to New York's Hypnote, Bobby writes home-spun romantic tales for the shy indie kid in all of us.
These lo-fi solo recordings are a million miles away from his work with the Pipettes, the all-girl indie pop sensations he is credited with having masterminded. Look out there's a monster coming!

www.myspace.com/monsterbobby

DOKTOR COCACOLAMCDONALDS
The good Doktor heads to Supernight from Derby via Dublin and the Edinburgh Festival.
He has recently been spotted singing in his pants on Jimmy Carr's DVD, popping up on BBC 3, penning ballads for Gene Hackman and abusing innocent bystanders with a battered Casio keyboard.

www.myspace.com/doktorcocacolamcdonalds

PLUS we'll have an exclusive set from special guest DJs Midlands Dance Club

All for £4!!!

Supernight is back from its summer hols with a bang!

Love Anders
