Hello,
How are you? What've you been up to lately? Have you changed your hair? I like it!
Here's some things we've been up to lately:
- Bird watching - we've got lots of little blue tits, great tits, blackbirds & robins fluttering around in our garden, along with a big fat squirrel that keeps eating all their seeds!
- Getting ready for the awesome new Fists release on Hello Thor records (details in previous post)
- Going to the auctions (it's a different world)
- Making more things on my sewing machine (tea cosies & placemats are my latest adventures)
- Practising for Jumpers for Goalposts (scroll down for more info)
- Going to Just The Tonic (only once, saw Paul Foot & thought he was really very funny)
AND...
- Watching loads of films & TV - round-up & recommends here:
Misfits - If you haven't got into this TV series yet then DO. It's funny, rude, a bit gory, endearing and exciting. About a bunch of asbo kids who get magic powers from a storm. That does it no justice. *RECOMMENDED*
Going The Distance - Anders will tell me off for adding this to my list, but I enjoyed it. If you're a fan of the romcom this strays slightly away from the usual format (by just being a bit less lame and having characters you're a bit more likely to want to be friends with) - e.g. Drew Barrymore is the main character and she's not a control freak like every other female in rom-com land. I liked it.
Black Swan - I still don't know how I feel about this film 2 weeks after seeing it and I'm still talking to people about it. That seems pretty good to me. However, I found it a bit annoying, over-blown and trashy too. It's hard to pigeonhole and hard to describe without giving anything important away. My enjoyment of it was shared 50-50 with annoyance, so this isn't a glowing recommendation from that point of view. I would however still say you should watch it, if only because it will keep you talking. *RECOMMENDED*
Beetlejuice - I am aware that I'm the last person in the world to see this film, but isn't it fun?! I love the bit where they all do a dance around the dining table and I bet that was awesome to film. Plus it has the woman in from all the Christopher Guest films. Love her.
30 Rock - We went for a marathon of the latest series at Bones' house and it was AWESOME. If you've never seen it then it's about Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) who is head writer on a SNL-type of show in America. It's also got Alec Baldwin in and he is hilarious. It's got a really high gag-rate, you care about the characters but it never tries to make you cry and Anders hearts Tina Fey. Watch it from the start, it will be a pleasure and a joy. **RECOMMENDED** (Big time!)
The Baader Meinhof film (I'm getting the name a bit wrong there) - This is often on those "films you should watch" lists, but I wasn't really feeling it that much. It's about a terrorist group in Germany in the 60's and is a bit confusing if you don't know anything about the situation (me) before you watch it. Interesting, some good performances and nice to see a mix of real-life footage and drama, but overall left me a bit cold.
Good Hair - This is the Chris Rock documentary about black hair. It's absolutely fascinating, a peek into a world I knew very little about. AND there is a hair styling contest. It's worth watching for that alone. One of the stylists entered before and her theme was "brokefront mountain" (no I don't get it either) and there was an awful video she made of her and some women dressed in cowgirl outfits with a bit of hay. It made NO sense and her entry in this documentary is even more random. A thoroughly enjoyable film, well-presented, good structure, interesting and funny in places. **RECOMMENDED**
So, that's what we've been up to.
Now on to what's coming up this week:
1 - Jumpers for Goalposts - Thursday @ Alley Cafe, FREE
This is a monthly event we run where you can come, hang out with your friends, hear a bit of music (usually just 1 band will play a few songs) and make something shit out of plasticine and pritt stick and straws. We call that part the Creative Competition and there are mega prizes involved. It's also very hard-fought and sometimes people create actual amazing things, not just rubbish penis-related puns!!
Anyway, this month we are doing something a little bit different. In place of our usual (talented) musical act YOU will be the band. Come and join in as we create an intergalactic jam session on tiny instruments. No musical talent needed (phew!), jsut enthusiasm and a willingness to have a go on a kazoo (no euphemism). We'll be playing a very exciting special TV theme tune... if we can all learn it quickly enough over the night to make our final performance a success then we will film it and share our talent with the world!
2 - Record Breakers - Saturday @ the Arts Theatre, £10 in advance
This is a huge gig organised by Denizen Records which features some of the best musical acts Nottingham has to offer, all together on one stage. Come along to see the likes of Yunioshi, Kogumaza, Dearest, Swimming, Hhymn & Fists ply their trade in this gorgeous venue. There are Late Of The Pier DJ's and apparently a world-record attempt too! You can get £10 tickets, or even get a cheap group booking deal from http://www.hellothor.com/.
what a lot of stuff. I'm tired now. See you thursday or saturday or both!

New release on Hello Thor Records - Fists single - Ascending b/w Stag
As you may be aware Anders runs a record label with Nick & Tom, based in Nottingham called Hello Thor. They do gigs and stuff and put out singles by amazing bands. Their first ever signing was Fists who have released an amazing 7" and a brilliant EP so far.
21st Feb 2011 will see the release of Fists' next single Ascending b/w Stag on limited edition coloured vinyl with an individually screenprinted sleeve. It's going to be a beautiful thing.
Both Ascending and Stag have already received loads of airplay on 6 Music, Radio 1 and were selected for the 6 Music Rebel Playlist. They are great. You can read more, pre-order the vinyl, download tracks and so on here. If you'd like to support Hello Thor then please do buy from their site http://www.hellothor.com/ - no middle man costs! Oh and if you'd like to hear more from them then follow them on Twitter (@hellothor) or sign up to the mailing list on the website.
You can hear previews of the tracks on the Fists myspace and you can see them live, celebrating the release at a huge gig at the Nottingham Arts Theatre on the 19th February with loads of other amazing bands including:
Swimming
Hhymn
Dearest
Yunioshi
Kogumaza
Injured Birds
AND special guest DJs. It's being put together by a new Nottingham label Denizen Records (look for it on facebook!) and it's going to be AWESOME!
Thanks!

Yunioshi @ Nottingham Contemporary
Saw Yunioshi play the Nottingham Contemporary bar over the Bank Holiday weekend. We very nearly didn't make it and were gutted to miss Japanese Sleepers & Spaceships Are Cool, but were delighted that we made it in time to hear Team Yunioshi launch their new EP.
What a fun gig! We missed the craft section but luckily there were still a man hanging around with foil wrapped round his head, and one man totally dressed as a robot. The sound was awesome as we came down through the building and didn't disappoint when we got into the bar. I had suspected it may feel a bit cold and sterile for performances, but the atmosphere was fantastic and the bar looked really cool. It was a bit like walking into a super cool party in a film.
Yunioshi sounded better than I've ever heard them sound live before, big props to the sound man for that. The new songs sounded ace, the old songs sounded fresh & everything was perfectly in proportion. Here's some pics:

Stuff What Is Happening
This went out to the Hello Thor mailing list earlier, and there was such a lot of nice stuff on there I thought I'd post it up here too:
THREE BANDS PLUS CRAFT AND FOOD IN A GALLERY FOR FREE
This Saturday night (29th May), our good friends Yunioshi are launching their new 5 track EP “How to survive a robot uprising” at Nottingham Contemporary. As well as Yunioshi and their super-fun brand of electro funk, there will also be the sunshine pop of Spaceships Are Cool and the indie-folk of the brilliant Japanese Sleepers. Plus a craft competition and, no doubt, something scrumptious courtesy of the Yunioshi catering corps. Free.
TWO BANDS AND US DJING IN ANOTHER GALLERY
Then, the Saturday after (5th June) we’ll be DJing at the launch of the new single by Hhymn at the Refectory (Hooton Street, off Carlton Road, Nottingham). Also playing will be one of our own…the very wonderful We Show Up On RadaR. £3.
TEN ACE SONGS INCLUDING ONE CALLED "LEGO RULES" TO DOWNLOAD FOR FREE
One of the greatest bands we have ever had the pleasure of putting on was the much-missed Death By TV - two 16-year olds from Loughborough who enjoyed drinking lemonade, jumping into each other, and making very exciting, very immature, very fun casio-punk in their bedrooms. They played a few gigs, changed their name several times and then split up to be famous, or clever, or something. We’re super happy that their entire discography is now available to download for free from http://www.methodistleisure.com/deathbytv/. Do it, you won't be sorry.
AND FINALLY

Actually, that’s about it for now. We’ll be back soon, but in the mean time, look out for Fists and We Show Up On RadaR at various festivals this summer (Summer Sundae, Y-Not, Splendour…plus more to come), and don’t forget you can buy their records from our website.
Also remember that we hold court at the Alley Café on the third Thursday of every month with Nottingham’s finest, funnest, free-est felt tips & folk night, Jumpers For Goalposts. Next month (Thurs 17th June) Japanese Sleepers are playing live. Hope to see you there.

Popcorn, shoots, jumpers and other random things
Hello!
The Hello Thor gig at the Broadway on Saturday was mental. Here are my over-riding memories from the evening:
1 - Dan T's visuals looking AMAZING properly projected on a big screen
2 - Looks of dread from all 3 Hello Thor boys as BattleCat rampaged round the room almost causing destruction
3 - The wonderful aroma as Yunioshi distributed popcorn in cute individual little bags during their set
4 - VERY LOUD Wu Tang Clan as Nick stormed his way through a DJ set
5 - A weird fight and a man being wrestled out... the perils of a late licence
6 - Tez calmly standing by in the big window with a guy who was dancing & almost stripping for the crowd
7 - Saying a man's feet looked like bananas because he had yellow shoes on
In other news, it's Jumpers for Goalposts tomorrow and Hello Thor will be celebrating their birthday with a calamitous Tom Tomas Club performance.
We've planted some vegetables in our garden, after a couple of strenuous weekends building wonky home-made raised beds, and our first shoots are already coming through!! We've got radishes, rocket & lettuce growing away in the garden!
Fists are playing in Sheffield this weekend and at Dot To Dot on Sunday! Can't wait to see them playing live again so I can hear the new song Ace is the Way. It's brilliant!
Tonight is Apprentice night round our way. I love it. What a bunch of idiots. I've got my fingers crossed that James doesn't get booted off because he's ace. A big smiley slightly goofy wordsmith who comes up with beautiful phrases like "codshit". No Sir Alan, fire Braces Ben instead!
Bye for now!

Jean Gene-y and Electro Pop-corn
Hello
There's (at least) 2 brilliant things happening this weekend...
1. There's a big charity fundraising party thing (or Arts and Fashion exhibition as I believe the organisers are referring to it!) happening at Lizard Lounge this Friday. For more info check out Leftlion and/or Facebook
2. Me and Tom and Nick are putting on a free gig at Broadway on Saturday.
It's going to be full of 303-busting beats and electronic mayhem. Line, Battlecat! and Yunioshi are playing and there's going to tons of free popcorn for everyone.

Both should be ace.
Hope you can make it
x Anders

Who doesn't like hotpants, beer and partying?
Hello
This Friday (16th May) we're all going to be down at The Chameleon to see 3 ace bands play and quite possibly dress up as Norse Gods. Hope you can join us...
BLOODGROUP - Three siblings from Iceland get together with a couple of friends from the Faroe Islands to make "electronic dance-pop for people that like hotpants, beer and partying". They end up sounding like all the best bits of Hot Chip, The Knife, Neon Neon and LCD Soundsystem but from Iceland (and the Faroe Islands). Bloody brilliant!
YUNIOSHI - Huw Stephens and Jo Whiley ("great innit") are fans, their singer's never seen without a sun visor and they make breakbeat-stealing indie rock that's got EMI interested. They are Nottingham's Yunioshi and they're gonna tickle your insides with their 'Fisher Price Pop'.
BATTLECAT! - The best thing to come out of Mansfield since Alvin Stardust taught us all the green cross code, Battlecat! have been described as a "two-man digital sh*t storm" by one over-excited bystander. They are actually thoroughly nice lads who just happen to make the kind of lovely racket that Transformers have sex to.
All this plus the Yeah I'll Play It Later DJs and probably a fake beard or two as well.
See you there
x Anders

Guest Post from Tom @ NotInNottingham... He's all wrong!
SUPERNIGHT / NOT IN NOTTINGHAM CHRISTMAS EXTRAVAGANZA
Is anyone feeling as rough as I am? That has to be my favourite christmas party ever and I'm still smiling about it now, even anders from supernight is smiling despite all the dancing leaving him with severe calf problems. I think I'm going to use this post to try and piece together my memories of the night and if any of them are inaccurate then please correct me:
Joey Chickenskin: Joey kicked the evening off in fine style with a brand new song about christmas in nottingham, he seems ever so friendly and only convention stopped me from bursting on stage to hug him. I set off a party popper at the wrong time.
Ashley and the Askins: Ash made a joke about speedboats before playing 'Fairytale of New York'. Someone in the crowd yelled 'too soon', that was funny. Despite the askins being absent and ash having to impersonate a woman I was touched.
Xmas Jazz Corner With Me... Chris Barrett: Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh. That's what I shouted cos that's what you do when Jazz is on. I've now got a ladyboy voice as a result. Chris played a few times but I can't remember which bands he was inbetween or which songs were christmas ones and which were just normal jazz.
Twenty Year Hurricane: I made a heart out of mine and Anders off of Supernight's fingers and showed it to the lead singer Nick. I only like him as a friend really. This was their first gig and they did a little st nick and we all decided they should play for people more often.
Spaceships Are Cool: la la la la la la la. I learned that Santa gets around by using friendship and kindness. The christmas cheer was definitely getting to a peak. Rob was poorly but you couldn't tell.
Yunioshi: It's getting blurry now but they had beards on and did a Run DMC song that rhymed eggnog and something else. It was brilliant. Later on I danced with them but I'll get to that later.
Petebox: He wasn't supposed to play but was filled with christmas cheer so we told him to get up there and do his stuff. He did a beatbox version of 'Jingle Bells' and we all danced. I shouted stupid things like brrrrrrap whilst waving a glowstick. I'm an idiot
Me DJing: I hope you enjoyed the records I was playing... I know I played lots of rock and roll and The Waitresses 'Christmas Wrapping,' I definitely saw plenty of you dancing so thanks.
Polymath: Polymath were definitely as into the spirit of the night as anyone else thanks to several sambucas. They brought a haunting element to the show and Anders from supernight made a face at me whilst mouthing 'these guys are bloody brilliant,' or something. He also suggested that they'd blown his face off in a good way.
Nuclear Family: were they on next? Is any of this in order? They definitely did the nights best version of driving home for christmas.
Fists: I love Fists... They did something about big baby jesus and were as ramshackley brilliant as ever. It's all very blurry at this point. I stopped drinking pints and moved on to whiskey and coke hurrah!
Not in Nottingham Vs Annual Gift Man: like Live Aid if it was in a garage and didn't actually help anyone at all. Not sure who was on stage but if you were then thankyou... I smashed up a £1.50 keyboard right at the end of the song... I'm an idiot. There was a girl dressed as a reindeer
The Supernight Crew: were bloody marvellous, Bex made the place look lovely, James sorted all the bands out and Anders compered like a man possessed (despite me hindering him).
Dancing: At the end of the night Anders and Bex spun some real party tunes and we all had a good dance. I remember Sadie from not in nottingham doing the best dance moves I've ever seen, I can't remember what they were, and I remember Yunioshi were partying like a band should party.
So that was pretty much it. I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did. We couldn't believe how many of you turned out and would love to thank all of you. Sorry we didn't bring enough mince pies to go round.
Also big thanks to Tim Smith from Fourmost Films and Tom Chaffe from Via Vaudeville! Who put on the visuals, massive thanks to all the bands and to everyone who bought the not in nottingham xmas album. We made enough to buy the sound desk we needed and so we can carry on podcasting next year.
On Sunday I was sick.
Happy Christmas one and all
Tom and the Not in Nottingham team
p.s. The christmas podcast is available now at http://www.notinnottingham.com/
p.p.s. check back in the next few days for photos

Hello!
I really hope you can make it to The Maze next Saturday. Not only is it our last gig of the year, but we're also helping Not in Nottingham launch their new Christmas LP.
Following on from last year's triumphant mix, it features the cream of Nottingham's musical talent jingling their bells, dingdonging merrily, and generally rocking (and folking) around the Christmas tree.
To celebrate, we've got a load of the bands, plus a load of our friends, coming along to play their favourite Christmas songs and help us get all festive.
It's going to be an indie-folk-gabba-bump'n'grind yuletide special with the twin gifts of live music and top DJs. Oh yes, all that and we may just receive a visit from the Annual Gift Man too. It's going to be the mother of all Christmas parties. And it's free, as our Christmas gift to you!
Hope to see you there!
Anders x

Wha' G'wan?
Hello there,
I've decided to write a quick update on all that’s going on with Supernight at the moment, so you can rest easy, safe in the knowledge that there’s a great party happening on August the 10th and you’re invited!
First of all, Anders and James are DJing at Rob from Yunioshi’s birthday party on Saturday. It should be a good night, if you want to come along drop us a line for details. Supernight@gmail.com.
Secondly, Jumpers for Goalposts is happening again, under the watchful eye of Supernight! We’re going to be at the Alley Café on the 1st August with a live act, some great tunes from Supernight DJs and another fantastic creative competition. It’s free, friendly and we’d love to see you there!
Finally, we’d like to tell you about our next party happening on August 10th at Loggerheads. There will be loads of DJs, acoustic acts in the caves and (as usual) lots of booze, decorations and dancing. Come and pretend it's summer!
Anyway, what else have we been up to? Went to see Amy Winehouse at the Eden Project last week which was fun, if not a little weird. I was prepared for her to scat until she was virtually unintelligible, but i didn't expect her to start hitting herself in the head with the microphone by the end of the set! Did anyone else see it? It was decidedly odd.
We also went to a warehouse party this weekend which I think was courtesy of Hugo Mendez, although i'm not quite sure. If it was his party, then check out the other stuff he's up to because it was brilliant. It was in an old "Boys Club" random venue in London which was great, although super hot in the main room where everyone was dancing. If anyone has any pictures of the venue (it's in Dalston called something or other "Boys Club", sorry that's vague) please tell me because it was beautiful and curious and I'd love to post them up here.
At one point we made our way upstairs to what we thought was another bar, but it turned out to be someone's house complete with Golden Wedding anniversary cards dotted around and a kitchen turned into a bar. We also bumped into Pete from Moog - the whole evening was really random. I just hope our party is as good, if not quite as hot/sweaty!
Well, hope you all have good weeks planned. Monday's are rubbish, right?
Love
Becky
